Facebook releases new email service, Good or bad move for Mark Zuckerberg??

Monday, November 15, 2010

Facebook is getting an uber upgrade. The new the social network's messaging system that's designed to fold in other, older forms of electronic text communication: chat, e-mail and SMS.
This new launch could make the social-networking site the largest Internet messaging provider and challenge rivals such as Google Inc. (GOOG), Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) and Microsoft Corp.

The new service, which will provide users with an "" email address, is designed to meld email, instant messaging and SMS text messages so that users can manage their communications through a single inbox.

Zuckerberg stated that the service, which has been under development for about one year, will also maintain users' conversation histories so that members can keep track of the communications they have had.

Zuckerberg suggested the site wasn't out to replace e-mail, noting that in a year or two, at best, some Facebook users would decide that "maybe e-mail isn't as important as it was before."
But as somebody who's been using e-mail since 1994, I can't take this move lightly. In suggesting that its 500-million-plus users (about 350 million of whom use its existing messaging system) centralize their online correspondence through its own service, Facebook would inevitably displace one of the oldest standards on the Internet.

A facebook engineer Joel Seligstein stated " We modeled it more closely to chat and reduced the number of things you need to do to send a message.Relatively soon, we'll probably all stop using arbitrary 10-digit numbers and bizarre sequences of characters to contact each other. We will just select friends by name and be able to share with them instantly. We aren't there yet, but the changes today are a small first step."
